Muscat, 27 June 2026 (ONA) — The Royal Hospital, in collaboration with Khoula Hospital and the Omani Center for the Regulation of Organ and Human Tissue Donation and Transplantation, has successfully carried out a comprehensive organ donation procedure from a patient declared brain dead. The operation resulted in saving the lives of four patients through the transplantation of the heart, liver, and two kidneys, marking one of the national achievements that reflects the high level of coordination and efficiency of Oman’s healthcare system.
This remarkable achievement began at Khoula Hospital, where a patient was confirmed brain dead in accordance with approved medical protocols. Specialized medical teams, in coordination with the Omani Center for the Regulation of Organ and Human Tissue Donation and Transplantation, immediately initiated the assessment process and completed all required medical, legal, and ethical procedures. They also communicated with the donor’s family, whose consent to donate their loved one’s organs embodied the highest values of generosity and altruism, giving four patients a renewed chance at life.
The Center, in cooperation with medical teams from Khoula Hospital and the Royal Hospital, conducted a series of clinical, laboratory, and immunological assessments to determine the suitability of the donated organs and evaluate their compatibility with patients registered on the national transplant waiting list. These assessments were carried out in accordance with rigorous scientific standards to ensure the highest levels of safety, quality, and transplant success.
Given the highly specialized requirements and advanced capabilities necessary for heart transplantation, the donor was transferred to the Royal Hospital, where specialized multidisciplinary teams performed the organ procurement and transplantation procedures within a fully integrated system characterized by precision and close coordination. This ensured the preservation of organ viability while minimizing the time between organ retrieval and transplantation.
This national achievement brought together highly qualified Omani professionals from a wide range of specialties, including transplant surgeons, cardiac surgeons, hepatobiliary and urological surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensive care physicians, hepatologists, nephrologists, emergency physicians, laboratory and blood bank specialists, immunology and histocompatibility experts, radiologists, nursing teams, operating theatre technicians, organ retrieval and transport teams, ambulance personnel, transplant coordinators, and supporting medical, technical, and administrative staff. All worked seamlessly over many hours to ensure the successful completion of every stage of the process.
The operation culminated in the successful transplantation of the heart, liver, and two kidneys into four patients suffering from end-stage organ failure. All transplant procedures were successful, with recipients showing stable postoperative recovery. They subsequently completed their treatment and rehabilitation programs and were discharged from hospital to continue follow-up care according to their individualized treatment plans.
Dr. Noreen bint Yousuf Al Balushiya, Director of the Omani Center for the Regulation of Organ and Human Tissue Donation and Transplantation, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that the Center is committed to managing every stage of the donation and transplantation process in accordance with approved regulatory and medical frameworks, while adhering to international best practices.
